Somebody Made a Cloning-Jesus Lowrider Movie. And It’s Awesome.

Mar 31, 2018

It's the next cult holiday classic.

The Custom Mary is a film whose plotline is “a young Latina in East Los Angeles meets an African-American Lowrider, and struggles to reconcile her faith and blossoming love affair while becoming dangerously involved in a religious attempt to clone Jesus.”

You heard it right.  It seems a group of priests--from a questionable storefront church--get their hands on some good old Jesus DNA.  They convince a young girl named Mary to be conceived with that DNA, because they believe it will be the literal second coming of Christ and thus doomsday, the end of the world.

I won't give away a couple big spoilers, but when baby Jesus comes, it's not exactly what the preachers had hoped for.

The movie is more a story from Mary’s perspective and her process of having the baby, than it is from any Jesus angle.

It is playing now on YouTube after having its run through HBO film festivals and streaming on Hulu.

It falls in the magical realism genre with some dark comedy touches.

It stars Alicia Sixtos (East Los High, Gente-fied) as Mary and includes some great cameos, including Janina Gavankar and the late Bill McKinney.

It is full of live sheep, Apocalyptic madmen, an amateuer scientist that lives with his mom, bad fathers, hopping lowriders, tricked out bicycles, magical apparitions, and a side of Los Angeles you often don’t get to see.
